Preposterous Prayer! A Prayer Blog From Fresh Heart Ministries

Preposterous needs require preposterous prayer

I believe in prayer, but have lessons to learn about praying.

I am a board member of Kidzana Ministries, whose simplified mission statement is to “equip local people to reach local kids all around the world.” Toward that end, they, along with many other mission organizations have launched an endeavor to raise up, train and equip one discipler for every fifty kids in the world.

With 2 billion kids under 15 years of age, that means they are believing for 40 million workers! Did you catch that astronomical number? 40 million!

And I’m expected to pray that kind of outrageous, preposterous prayer? I almost choked on my unbelief. “Let me pray for something I believe has possibilities,” I murmured mostly to myself.

And then I remembered an equally preposterous Scripture that appeared to give permission to pray outlandish and unrealistic prayers. It’s found in Ephesians 3:20 and it says, “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory …” KJV

This verse is not an exaggeration designed to move our faith incrementally ahead. It’s a simple statement: God can do more than we think He can! And not just more, but exceedingly more. And not just exceedingly more, but exceeding abundantly more than anything we can ask.

But the stunning feature of this verse takes us one gigantic step further. The verse says ‘ask or think.’ To ask God for something means that we can conceive it. We’ve thought about it and now are offering it as a request to this most capable God. But his ability not only supersedes our observation and analysis, but goes beyond our imaginations!

In other words, God’s ability is not limited by how far we can believe. There is a dimension that surpasses our ability to ‘see possibilities.’ God is comfortable operating in this zone. And praying for 40 million Christian workers for the children of this world moves me into this arena.

So I’m busy reorganizing my prayer agenda. I’m not going to just pray ‘sure bets.’ I’m not going to only analyze the odds and then pray accordingly. I’m not going to just present the options I have thought of.

Instead, I will pray like all the unreached kids on this planet are depending on my prayers. I will pray boldly, aggressively and consistently … as if tomorrow is looking over my shoulder today and I can’t delay.

And I’m going to pray the kind of prayer that gets God to stand, smile and say, “Really?”
