Who You Gonna Believe?

Who You Gonna Believe
Believability – who earns it?

For the last forty years or so we’ve had increasing difficulty believing our politicians. What they say isn’t necessarily what they mean or know. Truth isn’t quite as important as expediency or appearances.

And how believable are those ads promising instant relief from everything from acne to high blood pressure? Twenty years of high blood pressure and destructive eating habits erased overnight with a pill?

We must face the fact that the god of this world … the one who sets much of the agenda we live with … has been, is and will continue to be a liar. We can’t take anything he says to the bank because the check will bounce every  time!

Ah, but we do have a wonderful choice in this issue of believability. There is One whose word is true. We not only can take his word to the bank, we can sleep on it, too.

–                    When He promises peace, (John 14;27) He can deliver, no matter how much we’re told by the commentators to “be afraid … be very afraid.”

–                    When He promises to supply all of our needs, (Philippians 4:19) that promise is backed by all the resources of heaven, not the liquidity of the Federal Reserve Bank.

–                    When He promises you rest, (Matthew 11:28,29) it doesn’t come with side effects.

–                    And when He promises you salvation, (Romans 6:23) He doesn’t leave you with a bill for the outstanding balance. It’s been totally paid for in advance!

So it comes down to this: Who are you going to believe? Over-exposure to something tends to make it believable to us. If we hear over and over again that a certain life-style is perfectly acceptable, we eventually begin to believe it ourselves. When ‘wrong’ is labeled ‘right’ over and over and over again, it starts to blur our assessment.

That’s why it’s critical for those of us known as ‘believers’ to listen more to the One who is trustworthy than to listen to those to whom truth is relative. Woe unto any of us who give more time and attention to ‘truth modifiers’ than we give to the One who not only tells the truth, but is in reality “The Truth.”

Shame on any of us who come to believe everyone and everything but the One who is constantly telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth!

Enjoy the journey and don’t believer everything you hear!
