“ …he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.” Psalm 121:3,4 NIV
While we sleep, God doesn’t.
What does He do during those hours we are ‘out of commission? Solomon said that God would make our sleep sweet …
“When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down,
your sleep will be sweet.” Proverbs 3:24 Amplified Bible
God also keeps us safe while we sleep …
“In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me
dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8 NIV
There are times when God gives us counsel as we sleep. His words and thoughts instruct our hearts as we rest …
“I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel; my heart also instructs me
in the night seasons.” Psalm 16:7 NKJV
Driving through Montana recently I noticed millions of evergreen trees that God had flocked during the previous night’s snowfall. It reminded me of something Dave Willis wrote:
“While my newly-formed earth slept in darkness, I created the light. While Adam slept in the Garden, I created Eve. While my Children Israel slept in slavery, I brought forth a Deliverer to set them free. While they slept in the wilderness, I brought food from heaven to sustain them. While they slept in a foreign land, I prepared for them a Promised Land. While the tiny town of Bethlehem slept on that Silent Night, I brought forth a new baby-My Son, Your Savior. While you were sleeping in the darkness, I brought forth a great light.”
While you and I sleep, God keeps busy. His plans are ever expanding. His grace is reaching out to those who desperately need his intervention. His arms are encircling the broken. His love is being poured out on those whose loneliness defines their lives. He is blessing the downtrodden, healing the sick and revealing his heart to the skeptics.
Sleep well tonight and trust the Father with your coming day.
“It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late, to eat the bread of painful labors;
For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep.” Psalm 127:2 (NASB).
