Don’t Ignore God’s Blessings – Count Them!

In spite of the tension and troubles in our lives, if we’re honest we admit that we spend much of ever day managing our blessings!

“God’s blessing makes life rich; nothing we do can improve on God.”

 Proverbs 10:22 MSG

When you get to your late seventies, you’ve accumulated a lot of information.

Unfortunately, much of it is worthless, senseless and sometimes dangerous. Like:

  • Dip a match in vinegar and apply it to your warts… they’ll disappear (and they did).
  • Gargle peanut butter while standing on your head for obstinate hiccups… you’ll be cured (never tried this one; would rather eat the peanut butter).
  • Don’t move to California from the Midwest… you’ll backslide (we moved there and neither of us backslid).
  • Marry the right girl and live happily ever after (I did and we are!!)

Some things I learned while in school, but they meant little to me in life. Other information helped for a time, but its shelf life expired very quickly.

But there are some spiritual life lessons I have learned along the way that I now highly value. Most came through tough trials… burdensome delays… detours that made no sense at the time.

But those lessons were important for God to get deep into my life where they’d benefit me. Let me share some of them with you as I’m celebrating their impact in my life.

  • No one is more trustworthy than God. If He says something, you can believe it.
  • Somehow, He does come up with new mercies every day. Look for and welcome them.
  • Along with his intimate companionship, He offers that of dear, dear friends who grow more valuable to you with age.
  • God’s Word has timely help for every issue in life… from schedule to health to better relationships. Every issue.
  • Life has seasons and seasons don’t last forever. They may last too long in our view, but never forever.
  • God knows how to correct without harming us. His voice can break trees and move mountains, but He loves speaking softly and tenderly to us if we’ll be quiet enough to hear Him.
  • God offers more ‘free stuff’ to bless our lives than we could ever accumulate by winning the lottery twice! Enjoy creation, friends and your family… they cost you nothing.
  • Grandkids’ pictures never get old, just better.

Most of these got little to no thought when I was younger, but passing years puts life into a new matrix. It doesn’t answer every question, but solves many of them.

Be blessed this week and then recount those blessings!
