Did I Say That?!!?

Once you release words, they move into action in the lives of those who just heard them. Be careful…

Your tongue is writing the script for your future!

According to James (chapter three) the tongue is more useful than sticking out at someone you don’t like! Obviously, we are talking about more than the tongue – we’re talking about the words that fly out in anger, slide out without filtering and even mumble out barely heard.

Jesus warned in Matthew 12:34-37 that what comes out of our mouths is actually and always coming from our hearts! Wow… let that sink in. He then cautions that eventually we will be held accountable for every idle or careless word we have spoken. Maybe that’s why we are to listen more than we talk!

We’re reminded that both life and death reside in the tongue’s power (Proverbs 18:21). We’re warned that our tongue can start fires that scorch and destroy lives and relationships. (James 3).

There are so many dangerous things that happen when what we say is not tempered and blessed by the Holy Spirit. Cutting remarks – discouraging words – the passing on of unsubstantiated gossip – holding our tongue when truth should be spoken… all damage those around us.

That’s why the Bible warns against speaking ‘idle words’

But let’s end up positively. There is another side of our mouths where a ‘gentle tongue is a tree of life’ (Proverbs 15:4 ESV) and although harsh words ‘stir up anger’ (Proverbs 15:1), a soft answer calms things down immediately. (same verse)

I have the ability to use my words to bring healing (Proverbs 12:18). And God has purposed our tongues to bring forth wisdom in talking to others (Provers 10:31). What a goal to have in life to share God’s wisdom to those who need such a word!

The Psalmist David often spoke of using his lips to pour forth praise. Your lips can’t secure a better occupation!!

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight O Lord, my rock and my Redeemer.”

 Psalm 19:14 NASV
