A Kenworth and a Mini

Ever feel threatened by what’s in back of you and all around you? Through Christ you can handle it.

The driver beside me and I were waiting for the light to change. He was to my left in the turn lane and both of us were about to enter the busiest intersection in all of Seattle. He looked petrified. Part of it could have been the diminutive size of the Mini-car’ he was driving. But most of his fear came from what was behind him!

A huge Kenworth truck pulling a 53-foot trailer was on his bumper. Not just close, but actually touching his bumper. With his long hood impeding his forward vision, the truck driver had no idea this tiny impersonation of a car was in front of him and he was allowing his truck to creep forward in anticipation of the light changing. The Mini driver was being pushed into heavy cross traffic!

The look of terror on the face of this driver was how I often have felt in my life.

I’m being pushed and prodded. My ‘space’ around me has been violated. Think ‘hemmed in, hopeless, defeated, without a future, confused, intimidated.’ It seems to be the heritage being passed down to us.

What we need is a Savior who can get us to those ‘still waters’ of Psalm 23. Someone who knows how to restore our souls and give us our lives and peace back. We need Jesus to take the grillwork of the giant Kenworth out of our life’s rear-view mirror.

We need faith stronger and more resilient than a ‘Mini.’ Our faith doesn’t need to be bigger than a Kenworth, but it needs to be able to stand its ground, dig its tires in and put up a fight against that which pummels us.

It’s better to stay clear of intersections in our lives where the ‘big rigs’ prowl. And we shouldn’t prowl those places which produce fear… people who deplete our faith and hope. Our faith is stronger when we’re growing through the Word, through friendship with spiritual fit people and we have an awareness of when Holy Spirit gives us specific words of directions.

We cannot take detours around every negative force we encounter (often that’s where ministry happens), so our dependence must be on the One who has promised us that no Kenworth that comes against us can harm us or bully us.

On to victory!

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10 NIV
