A Kid Again!

It’s not a call to become ‘childish’ but childlike. It’s important to Jesus and He values it more than we realize.

I detest the fact that as we age, we begin picking things apart… including the Gospel.

  • We complicate things entirely too much, while a child is drawn to the simple.
  • We make faith a difficult thing to hold on to, while a child believes easily.
  • We err on the side of skepticism, but kids hang on to hope.
  • If it’s too easy, we are suspicious of it. Children adopt the easy explanation.

This morning, the Children’s Department of our church shared their Christmas message. It moved me as strongly as anything I’ve seen. There were close to 150 participants and each one did their part to make the Gospel as clear and compelling as any presentation I have ever witnessed.

As much as I lay claim to following Jesus for over 70 years, and recognize the spiritual growth in my life… I couldn’t help but ask the Father to make my heart more like it was when this whole relationship with Him first started in my life.

I was awed by any nearness of the presence of Jesus. I was swept away by the miracles of the Bible and those seen around me. I was blown away with the knowledge that the Creator of the universe had invited me into His Family!

Kids just trust and don’t demand excessive proofs. If told that God loves them and wants to be their Forever Friend, they respond, “That’s cool!” Their faith seems to come more from relationship than intense Biblical study, and seems to be the kind of faith that Jesus encourages.

I know that most stories in the Bible are played out by adults, but don’t for a minute ignore some notable Kingdom Kids…Many theologians imagine David, the giant killer, as an adolescent when he stepped onto the stage of Bible heroes. Josiah became one of the great kings of Israel who tore down idols and re-established worship of the one, true God. He ascended to the throne at the age of eight! (See II Kings 22,23)

Jesus, using a young child as an example said unless we turned from our sins and became like little children, we’d never get into his Kingdom! (Matthew 18:3)

Let’s stop our scrutiny of non-essentials and welcome the Christ of Christmas with child-like exuberance and thankful hearts.

“Beware that you don’t look down upon a single one of these little children.

For I tell you that in heaven their angels have constant access to my Father.”

Matthew 18:10 TLB
