What if God sent a resume?

If God were in need of a job and sent his resumé to me … what a document that would be! It’s fun to consider what He might have to say about his background, educational experience or family.

When stating the job He is seeking for he would likely state: “Looking to become the Lord of your life … your provider, comforter, protector and lifelong friend.”

Under the ‘Past Employment Review’ I smile to imagine Him crossing through the word ‘past’ and replacing it with ‘Alpha and Omega’ and then including such positions as:

• Lord of heaven’s armies
• Creator of all things
• Omnipotent
• Omnipresent
• Omniscient
• Immense in love
• A good, good Father

What got me going on this whole thought was Chris Tomlin’s great worship song in which we sing “You’re a good, good Father. It’s who you are.” And in declaring that affirmation of my heart it makes me realize something else.

As I sing that statement and agree with it in my heart, I am actually adding a reference to the bottom of God’s resumé. You know … the praise of people who have seen someone’s work and been blessed or helped by it.

But the next phrase of Chris’ song goes on my resume. It states: “And I’m loved by you. That’s who I am!” If anything defines me at this stage of my life, it’s not my past positions, career milestones, miles travelled, things accumulated. The greatest distinguishing feature of my life and the part of my resumé that’s in bold for all to see is that “He loves me!”

There’s usually a great deal of pride that we pour into our resumés as we compile and send them out. “Look at me … I’m worthy of your attention … I am trustworthy and oh, so smart. I’m really good at a lot of stuff!”

But I humbly want to declare through my resumé and entire life that God is the deal, not me. As Max Lucado says, “It’s not God’s work to make a big deal out of me; It’s my job and privilege to make a big deal out of Him.”

Obviously God is secure in every respect. He doesn’t need a job or the perks that come with it. But He would love to be your manager, to direct your life into the most amazing places … to lead you unerringly into satisfying relationships … to become your life-long companion and friend.

To be loved by God is an amazing, life-altering experience.

“For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior.

He will take delight in you with gladness.

With his love, he will calm all your fears.

He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
