Who Are Your Heroes?

Who Are Your Heroes?

“The godly people in the land
 are my true heroes!

I take pleasure in them!” Psalm 16:3 New Living Translation

Living in a culture that puts more emphasis on style than on substance, it’s easy to get confused about who our heroes are.

–       When we insist on artificial color added to our food and drinks so they ‘look better’ …

–       When we wear expensive designer sweat suits that we have no intention of sweating in …

–       When we prefer fruit in the supermarket that looks perfect at the expense of taste …

–       When we save our adulation for the rich and famous whose character flaws are obvious, but they ‘look striking’ on the cover of the tabloids …

–       When we’d rather be titillated at the risqué behavior of the foolish than to celebrate the accomplishments of the godly …

–       When we overlook the accomplishments of good people who have worked hard for their contribution to their world because we’re too busy ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ over the contrived importance of those whose contribution to their world is synthetic and often illusionary …

Then we’ve got our priorities messed up. It’s often difficult to pick out the ‘godly’ in the land for a number of reasons. They don’t get the press. A magazine entitled “The Deeds of Decent People” probably wouldn’t have many subscribers. Second, they tend not to toot their own horn. And third, their motivation isn’t to look good, but to leave something good behind as they move through life.

This week, take directions from the Psalmist and seek out the godly in the land. Pay attention to their input and realize that little by little they are making this world a bit more livable and are contributing to the moral fabric that holds a civilization together.

Honor them by giving them hero status.
