God’s Anatomy – His Breath

Nothing exists without the breath of God. May his breath permeate your life.

“It’s your breath in our lungs and we pour out our praise to You Lord”

Picture God standing before pre-earth’s infinite empty darkness. His Spirit is brooding (hovering), not over its chaos and total lack of order, but contemplating what is to come. And God’s Spirit (Hebrew word ‘Ruach’ also means breath) brings forth all of creation.

Included in this creative process, God takes a lifeless vessel of His design, given enough of his DNA to make him resemble even God Himself and ‘… breathed into his nostrils the breath of life’ (Genesis 2:7) God’s very breath becomes the source and sustenance of human life.

God’s re-creating breath brings about a truly amazing sight for the prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel 37) when He assembles a valley full of dried human bones, and tendons and flesh with skin and then breathes on them and they come to life. God’s breath re-creates new life.

In a very visceral way, the breath in our lungs is connected to the activity of God inside of us. Every breath we take reminds us that God’s breath is sustaining us and that He is alive and active in our lives.

Even our understanding of the Bible is a result of God breathing Himself into chosen authors throughout Scripture (II Timothy 3:16) and what a Masterpiece those writers have given us. No wonder we call the Bible ‘God’s Word’ for that is absolutely what it is. God’s breath still speaks to us.

Jesus carried on this ‘breath transfusion’ in John 20:22 when after appearing to his disciples after his resurrection, Jesus breathes on them and says “receive the Holy Spirit.” God’s breath continues leading and empowering us.

God is never ‘breathless’ – He has enough breath left to complete His plans for our lives. Take encouragement from the following Scriptures and allow God to breathe over you any way He desires this coming week

“The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” Job 33:4 God’s breath doesn’t just move air… it gives life.

“… the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding.” Job 32;8 God’s breath brings wisdom.

“You blew with Your wind, the sea covered them; They sank like lead in the mighty waters.” Exodus 15:10 God’s breath can protect you.

“But with righteousness He will judge the poor, and decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.” Isaiah 11:4 God’s breath can right earth’s wrongs.

As the old chorus says, “Let the breath of God now breathe on me!”
