Helping God By Worrying

worrying

A HIGH WIND WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 AM PDT TUESDAY. AREAS OF WEST WINDS 2O TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 55 MPH. ISOLATED GUSTS TO 70 MPH.  US Weather Service alert for Apple Valley, CA

This was the alert I read last night, and true to the prediction the wind shook our house throughout the night. It howled and blasted. It moved everything not bolted down. It was ferocious.

In the pre-dawn darkness I could hardly open the car door against its aggression. It even challenged me to stay in my lane on the highway. I was surprised to see the moon still in its assigned spot in the night sky and even more surprised that the intense westerly wind had absolutely no effect on the moment the sun broke over the horizon, right on schedule.

Amazing!

Ludicrous and foolish, you say … thinking that wind here would somehow affect the sun and the moon. To which I would reply, no more ludicrous than believing that worry can keep something from happening.

This is an issue that most of us face on a regular basis and we know that Jesus spoke frequently about the futility of worry. We also know that He instructed us to stop worrying. Through the Apostle Paul He gave us a most amazing alternative to this destructive use of our time and energy … pray!

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Philippians 4:6 New Living Translation

It’s a pretty simple plan really. When entering the dead-end street of worry and anxiety, back up and turn instead in the direction of prayer. “But,” you respond, “I like to feel like I’m doing my part in the process. God does whatever it is He does, and I do my part by worrying.”

Allow me to burst your bubble … thinking you are making some sort of contribution to the resolution of your issues. What you accomplish through worry doesn’t affect the outcome one tiny iota. You are accomplishing absolutely nothing. Zip. Nada.

All you’ve done is give God more to do. Now He has to deal with your physical and emotional condition as well. All your worrying hasn’t helped him … it’s only hurt you.

This week your assignment is to let God be God … quit worrying … rely solely on his ability to bring his purposes about in your life and to solve your most un-solvable issues. And thank Him that’s He’s strong enough not to need your help!

Enjoy the journey and watch God work!
