Sturdy As A Spider Web
“A man without God is trusting in a spider’s web. Everything he
counts on will collapse.” Job 8:14 NLT
How secure are the things or people you depend on?
Ever been lied to by a salesman or politician? Did your warranty cover less than what you had been made to believe it covered? Did the local weatherman promise sunshine for your wedding in the park shortly before the heavens opened up and sent everyone running?
Some have leaned on the promise of a spouse’s forever love … there have been many who were promised a promotion that never was honored. All around us are people leaning on fences that are falling over, or as Job described are attempting to hold themselves upright leaning on a spider’s web.
Disillusion sets in for some who quit trusting anyone and begin to distrust everyone.
“Maybe I should depend only on myself” some think. And how’s that working out for you?
We even let ourselves down.
If God’s Word says anything about dependence it says that God is dependable. He loves to be relied upon. He takes great delight in extricating us from our trials. He knows how and when to rescue us from an enemy.
His heart is saddened whenever we look for help in a direction other than where He stands waiting to fight our battles, bind up our brokenness, give good directions.
His strong everlasting arms will never bend under pressure as we lean on them.
This week take inventory of the things or people you trust. Are they secure? Strong? Do they have your best interests at heart? Do they have a history of never letting you down?
Depend less on them and more on God whose promises have stood the test of time.
- He’s promised to give strength to the weary – Isaiah 40:29
- He’s promised that no weapon formed against us will prosper – Isaiah 54:17
- He’s promised that He’ll give wisdom if needed – James 1:5
- He’s promised to forgive our sins – I John 1:9
- He’s promised to never leave us – Deuteronomy 31:8
- He’s promised to deliver us from fears – Psalm 34:4
- He’s promised to be our strength and shield – Psalm 28:27,28
Trusting a God like this sure beats leaning on a spider’s web!
“But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices
in your salvation.” Ps 13:5 NIV
