The Anatomy Of God – His Fingers

You may just need a tiny bit of the power of God’s finger to get you through this tough spot. It’s there for you!

In discussing God’s anatomy through his eyes, hands, breath and heart… we realize that we are talking, not about a physical body like ours, but a spiritual body like God’s. There’s a big word called “anthropomorphism” and means ‘the process of assigning human characteristics to God to better understand his character and actions.’

Today we look at the FINGERS of God. While Scripture only refers to God’s fingers four times, they contain important meaning for those of us intent on following Him.

In Exodus 8 God is getting the attention of Egypt’s leader through a series of miraculous plagues. Aaron calls for the first three ‘signs’ and Pharaoh’s magicians match each of them.

Then God got serious. Aaron speaks to the dust and it turns into tiny gnats. They’re everywhere and in everything but the magicians can’t duplicate this and say to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” Exodus 8:19 It’s their way of saying “Their God’s finger can do things no one else can do!”

You may not need the staggering power of his arms, but you need to be awestruck by just the power of his finger!

Now the second reference to God’s finger is also in Exodus 31:18:When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.” NIV

Here come the Ten Commandments, not from a stodgy old ‘kill joy’ but from the finger of a Creator who knows ahead of time the turmoil, sadness and destruction that will come from ignoring these critically important rules for living. It’s a Father’s heart longing to see his kids live life to the fullest and not be derailed through their disobedience.

However He did it, the letters were devised and formed by Him, the writing and intentions were His, and the engraving on the stones was done by His own power.

And lastly, Jesus used God’s finger in healing a mute man from a demon and then told his critics, “If I drive out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you” Luke 11:20 NIV

When God uses his unlimited power to intervene directly in the affairs of your life… it will be unmistakable where it came from. Man can never compete with or challenge that power.
