Keep Your Mouth Shut & Your Eyes Open

It surprises some to realize that closed mouths and open eyes can bring much success in our walk with God. Use them both well.
(Note! These admonitions to ‘keep’ obeying all of God’s intentions for our lives cannot be listed ‘most to least important.’ What one desperately needs immediate help in ‘keeping’ is a non-issue to one and critical to someone else. Just wait – you will find the one that fits you!)
KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!
Anyone hoping to get through this year with a great spiritual batting average, must learn when to talk and when not to… to speak words that build up or words that destroy.
Consider these verses (and additional references at the end of the devotional) and then take note of a few Biblical instructions.
“Anyone who says he is a Christian but doesn’t control his sharp tongue is just fooling himself, and his religion isn’t worth much.” James 1:26 TLB “ Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip.” Provers 4:24 MSG
- Loose lips sink ships (warning during WW 2), but loose lips also can sink hope, friendships and peoples’ lives and reputations.
- Learn to speak God’s Words and ask the Holy Spirit when to speak them.
- Clean up loose lips and say what you believe… not fence-sitting confusion. Let your “yes” be “yes” and your “no” really be “no’.
- God hates gossip and wasted, careless words.
KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN
“Keep your eyes open for spiritual danger; stand true to the Lord;” I Corinthians 16:13 TLB “Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts. Amen. Sincerely, John.” I John 5:21 “Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” Psalm 119:18 NLT
- This new year will contain traps for all of us. Some will be deeper and more destructive than others. Shoot for a victorious year of hearing from God, obeying Him completely and immediately and don’t allow your eyes to take you into dangerous territory on purpose!
- Stand true to God’s Word and desperately hang on to God’s presence in your life. Don’t try to go it alone, but surround yourself with ‘bunker buddies’ who share your determination to stand true to the Lord.
- We’re not just looking out for danger… God is going to show us marvelous and breathtaking things that He sees in our futures. There is victory ahead, more grace than we can handle and an excitement about tomorrow that will make us leap out of bed in the morning. Expect great things from your great Heavenly Father this year.
